The Sinicization of Sociology: Academic? Politics? Or Academic Politics?

  • Online:2020-01-24 Published:2020-01-24

Abstract: From a purely academic perspective, the “sinicization of sociology” is an unproblematic issue that does not need to be discussed in the context that sociology has developed to the present extent in China. There are two non-academic factors contributing to the discussion of the “sinicization of sociology”: one is political, which has much to do with the legitimacy of the discipline in China; the other is academic politics, which related to the anxiety of Chinese scholars about the identity of Chinese sociology and Chinese sociologists in the academic community of modern world sociology. Sociology is not only the product of western society, but also the product of modern society. Therefore, some understandings in the discussion of “sinicization of sociology” are worth rethinking. There are two types of academic subjectivity that need to be clari?ed: one is represented by Zhang Zhidong’ s “Chinese learning for the foundation, western learning for practical use”; the other is the subjectivity of “Marxist” approach that place oneself in the development trend of the modern world and examine the Chinese society based on the “human society”. In fact, the latter is what we should pursue and establish today. If “observing the world from China” is the beginning of China’s academic modernization, then “observing China from mankind” is the beginning of China’s modern academic maturity.
