Abstract:

Games are open worlds sketched out within a radius of distance that intersects or opposes reality, naturally appealing to players. The narrowing and alienation of identity anchor players as “playbours”. Under the combined influence of subjective and objective factors, playbours have become the “Narcissus” of the open world, trapped in a dilemma of being controlled. By analyzing the spiritual world of playbours through the lens of digital psychopolitics, we find that subject enlargement, spiritual escape, and emotional acquisition serve as the internal driving forces urging playbours towards the open world. However, the affirmative “intelligent politics” has plunged playbours into spiritual dilemmas, including data absorption, freedom paradoxes, subject alienation, emotional co-optation, and the “work-game” syndrome. To address these issues, we propose, under collaborative governance, to set boundaries for labor-capital-production-marketing relations, balance capital-driven forces with game freedom, allow coexistence between political subjects and negative roles, grasp the direction of virtual and peripheral emotions, and encourage playful resistance from non-meritorious subjects. Perhaps, by working together, we can open up a path of spiritual and political liberation for game playbours and realize a rational return from playbours to players.
