Abstract:

How could Shanghai, as a city, give birth to a dream in the 1930s? At the same time, what kind of self and other does this dream map out? How did it present its own subjectivity and soul? This has to do with how modern China, especially literary figures such as Eileen Chang, imagined and shaped the modern city. Previous studies have focused on Eileen Chang’s novels and even on urban literature as a whole, where “Shanghai” exists as an object, but Eileen Chang writes about Shanghai as a “living” city, where the city itself evolves into a modern subject, mapping the anxieties and desires, the lacks and deficiencies of the characters, and interacting with them to summon up each other’s traumatic experiences and collective unconscious. Shanghai has also acquired its own physical attributes, becoming a being with the functions of perception and experience, with its “body” overflowing with essence and soul, pushing “modern” literature and its urban writing into a deeper and more profound direction.
