Abstract:

Sixty years ago, Marshall McLuhan’s “Understanding Media” revolutionized public perception with the assertion that “the medium is the message”. Over the past six decades, McLuhan and his book, ideas have experienced ups and downs, but regardless of praise or criticism, they have remained indispensable in media studies. In the emerging trend of digital-intelligence interaction, amidst the new landscape transitioning from internet platforms to social platforms, and further to mirror platforms, reflecting on “the medium is the message”, re-examining “extensions of man”, and reinterpreting “Understanding Media” hold positive significance for advancing media studies in China and constructing an independent knowledge system. To this end, we organized the “Digital Communication” Hangzhou Dialogue, focusing on McLuhan’s research and viewpoints in “Understanding Media”, the specific significance of “media” and media studies for academic research across disciplines, and how to open up new spaces and imaginations based on McLuhan’s work while grounded in China’s empirical context. This article compiles and publishes selected expert viewpoints and on-site discussions for the readers’ benefit.
