Abstract: Accent, taste, identity are three lifelong matters that may initially appear disparate. However, a closer examination reveals their profound interconnections. They are all formed, developed, and stabilized during the critical period of childhood, demonstrating remarkable synchronicity in their development timelines and patterns. This consistent critical period effect among the three transcends perceptual knowledge and life experience, nor is it a mere coincidence. Instead, it is directly related to the biological foundations of human brain and gut microbiota development. We then conducted a questionnaire survey among the contemporary youth, yielding compelling evidence in support of this view. This paper highlights the pivotal role of childhood as the critical period. By fully utilizing the critical period effect, we can foster bilingual or multilingual language acquisition, cultivate a diverse taste and food preferences, and nurture a stable and enduring emotional connection and sense of belonging to one’s hometown and motherland.
