Abstract:
The existing discourse on the human body fails to adequately capture the complexities of human life situations and emotional experiences. Consequently, the unspeakable bodily suffering of humans often finds expression through the body of animals. Phantom limb emerges as a literary device that constructs a shared “body” for humans and animals, leveraging imagination, sensation, and emotion. Often associated with pain, the phantom limb can only be perceived and located through pain. It represents a lost bodily part, an imagined extra-corporeal entity, and a historical carrier of unexperienced yet endured pain. This article posits that the phantom limb can serve as a theoretical construct, contributing to the understanding of transcultural and transspecies kinship as a historical emotion, critical apparatus, and research perspective. By perceiving the whole through rupture, seeking connection through separation, and finding healing through suffering, the phantom limb prompts us to reconsider how different subjects should coexist and interpret their bodies on this planet of multi-ethnic literary coexistence and multi-species symbiosis, as well as the role of humanities in this context.
