Abstract:

In the course of contemporary China’s modernization, the “disappointment” experienced by grassroots intellectual youth profoundly mirrors the social ailments of Chinese society. The academiccommunity has produced a series of narratives about contemporary grassroots intellectual youth, primarily through field investigation reports and non-fiction writing. Influenced by globalization, the narratives possess multiple reference points within the cultural field, receiving the dual traction of ongoing “modernization” and reflection on “modernity”, forming two distinct writing paths: introverted individual care and extensive societal order reflection, striving to encapsulate and transcend “disappointment”. As knowledge production, these narratives offer ample cultural symbols and observational coordinates for understanding the spiritual realm and living conditions of grassroots intellectual youth in the dimensions of emotional and social knowledge. Whether this knowledge production can continue to exert a positive influence on China’s social development hinges on its ability to transcend the ideological constraints imposed by the Western discourse system, break free from the cyclical replication of social imaginaries such as “children from humble backgrounds” or “small-town youth”, thereby activating the socialist resources inherent in China’s grassroots and existing cultural traditions, and restoring the action subjectivity and inherent sense of purpose of grassroots intellectual youth in the balance between individuality and collectivity.
